Hamlin Oranges

Hamlin Oranges are usually round to oval shaped and have a dark yellow to orange color with a thin and smooth peel. They are medium sized and are also seedless so that makes them a great juicing orange. They are native to Florida, found in 1879 in Glenwood.

Mars Oranges

Grown early in the season, these oranges are prized for their sweet flavor and thin rind. although the rind may be a dusty yellow color rather than the typical brighter orange varieties. They make excellent juicing oranges as well as sweet additions to snacks and recipes.

Valencia Oranges

The Valencia Orange is a sweet orange first hybridized by California pioneer agronomist and land developer William Wolfskill, on his farm in Santa Ana in southern California in the United States. Primarily grown for processing and orange juice production, Valencia oranges have seeds, varying in number from zero to seven per fruit. However, its excellent taste and internal color make it desirable for the fresh markets, too. Worldwide, Valencia oranges are prized as the only variety of orange in season during summer.

Early Orange

Early oranges make harvest possible before the winter freezes in Florida. They have a lighter juice color than the later oranges and are mild in flavor. Varieties are available October thru January.

Watermelons

No other fruit says summer like the subtly crunchy, thirst quenching watermelon. Although watermelons can now be found in the markets throughout the year, the season for watermelon is in the summer when they are sweet and of the best quality.

As a member of the Cucurbitaceae family, the watermelon is related to the cantaloupe, squash and pumpkin, other plants that also grow on vines on the ground. Watermelons can be round, oblong or spherical in shape and feature thick green rinds that are often spotted or striped. They range in size from a few pounds to upward of ninety pounds.

Onions

Onions are often chopped and used an ingredient in various hearty warm dishes, but are often used as a main ingredient in their own right, for example in French onion soup or onion chutney, they are also used raw in cold salads. Onions pickled in vinegar are eaten as a snack. Common onions are normally available in three colors: yellow, red, and white. Yellow onions are full-flavored and are a reliable standby for cooking almost anything. Yellow onions turn a rich, dark brown when cooked and give French onion soup its tangy sweet flavor. The red onion is a good choice for fresh uses or in grilling and char-broiling. White onions are the traditional onion used in classic Mexican cuisine. They have a golden color and sweet flavor when sautéed.

Honeydew

Honeydew has a round to slightly oval shape. The flesh is usually pale green in color, while the smooth peel ranges from greenish to yellow. Like most fruit, honeydew has seeds. Honeydew’s thick, juicy, sweet flesh is often eaten for dessert or breakfast, and is commonly found in supermarkets across the world. This fruit grows best in semiarid climates and is harvested based on maturity, not size.

Peppers

A wonderful combination of tangy taste and crunchy texture, sweet bell peppers are the Christmas ornaments of the vegetable world with their beautifully shaped glossy exterior that comes in a wide array of vivid colors ranging from green, red, yellow, orange, purple, brown to black. Despite their varied palette, all are the same plant, known scientifically as Capsicum annuum. They are members of the nightshade family, which also includes potatoes, tomatoes and eggplant.

Sweet peppers are plump, bell-shaped vegetables featuring either three or four lobes. Green and purple peppers have a slightly bitter flavor, while the red, orange and yellows are sweeter and almost fruity. Paprika can be prepared from red bell peppers (as well as from chili peppers). Bell peppers are not ‘hot’. The primary substance that controls “hotness” in peppers is called capsaicin, and it’s found in very small amounts in bell peppers. Although peppers are available throughout the year, they are most abundant and tasty during the summer and early fall months.
